| I've always depended on the kindness of strangers... |
[Jul. 4th, 2009|10:37 am] |
The following is a letter to the Editor that appeared in yesterday's copy of The Ann Arbor News:
On May 15, seven friends and I went to Palio for a pre-prom dinner. We talked loudly and ceaselessly, helping each other decide what to order and simply having fun. Soon one of my friends nudged me. "This couple keeps staring at us," she whispered. "Maybe we're being too noisy." I wouldn't have been surprised if we were, so I did my best to quiet everyone down. The couple left a few minutes later.
While we were sharing desserts, our waiter approached us. "So girls," he said, "I just want to let you know that your meal is entirely paid for. The couple over there" - he pointed to where the starers had been sitting - "took care of it. They wanted you to know that you all look really beautiful, and they hope you have a good time tonight."
We were so astonished - and so grateful - that we squealed and cried and hugged each other. And we reached one unanimous conclusion that night: that there really are kind people out there - the sort who will randomly buy your dinner and sneak out the door. No matter how difficult life may seem at times, there are truly good people in the world.
If there is a better lesson for us to learn just before we venture out into the world on our own, I can't think of it. So thank you, mysterious benefactors, for a wonderful lesson and a great meal.
Overall, it's a pretty cool situation all around. The fact that it happened initially is awesome. And the fact that these girls felt compelled to write a thank you note and get it published is really neat.
And the really awesome bit is that the couple was my parents. (And they got to see the letter.) |

Some days you wake up and think, "Today, I am going to accomplish these things, and it's going to be magical."
And then you finish work and all that zest fizzles out.
Ugh... I hate it when zest fizzles!
EDIT: The zest re-ignited. I took a talk to the library and checked out ten books. YAY FOR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY AND BOOKS! |

| Wedding #2 |
[Jun. 29th, 2009|09:48 am] |
I just got back form Traverse City, where I attended my second wedding in 9 days.
This time it was for an old friend (from middle and high school). The wedding was absolutely lovely and the reception was fun fun fun.
But there is something very strange about seeing someone you grew up with getting married. To be quite honest, it weirded me out ever so slightly (as did seeing a far number of ghosts from past lives).
Regardless of my own unease, I'm very happy for this friend and wish her all the joy in the world. She's a completely genuine person, and I was grateful that I got to be there to celebrate with her!
More? Probably. |

| Quickly, before the interweb breaks again! |
[Jun. 24th, 2009|06:01 pm] |
The reason I was in Florida (where it was hot) was because two of my best friends were getting married. I have to say, I absolutely LOVE weddings when I know both the bride and the groom personally AND I know that they are completely perfect for each other.
The wedding had several wedding day miracles and everything went off without a hitch. It was the perfect wedding for these two people.
And I was totally the hot bridesmaid (don't want to brag, but...).
I'm sure there will be more talk of the trip... lots of musing on my latest shifts at Big Thunder Mountain (did I mention it was hot?) and reviews of the latest Walt Disney World attractions (American Idol HOT, Stitch's Dance Party NOT). I also am thinking that there's gonna be a rousing round of the lyrics meme (with a few modifications) in the near future. Just sayin'... |

| Tattoos |
[Jun. 1st, 2009|08:08 am] |
So on the drive from Michigan, my brother and I spent a large portion of time talking about tattoos (and the fact that we both secretly want to get one, but are majorly terrified about the whole ordeal).
I'm kind of minorly fascinated with tattoos in general... so I have a meme. Feel free to pick and choose which questions you answer based on your comfort level.
1. Do you have a tattoo? (If the answer is YES, continue on. If the answer is NO, skip to 7)
2. How many tattoos do you have?
3. What is your tattoo?
4. Where is your tattoo?
5. Why?
6. Post a picture!
7. If you were to get a(nother) tattoo - what, where, and why?
8. Does someone else have a tattoo that you particularly enjoy? What is it? Can you sneak a picture of it? |

| I want a goose that lays golden eggs! |
[May. 23rd, 2009|08:09 pm] |
I want to buy an apartment (or a house even, DREAM BIG) and make an amazing home office/craft room/writing area. I want it to be charming with all the modern comforts. AND I WANT IT NOW!
Sometimes, living at home seems like a stupid idea.
(And sometimes, when I look at my tuition bill, it's a very smart idea.) |

| ZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzz! |
[May. 21st, 2009|11:16 pm] |
I don't know why, but my job just takes it out of me. I don't know what happens; but, after a six hour shift at the cafe, I go directly home and crash. I do not pass go and a definitely do not collect $200.
For a while there, I was always opening, and it made good sense that after getting up at 4:30a, I felt compelled to return to my natural habitat (read: MY BED) when my shift ended at noon. But... I should be adjusting by now. I would think...
Bah! I'm just gonna go to bed now. |

[May. 17th, 2009|07:55 pm] |
Pictures and details are forthcoming, but you should all know that the Disney Cruise Line trip was absolutely incredible.
If anyone out there in cyberspace is on the fence about enjoying a trip with DCL, consider this a shove onto the positive side... it was freaking awesome. |

| Update-type-thing |
[May. 11th, 2009|01:49 pm] |
1. Cruise. I'm cruisin' it up Disney style starting on Thursday! It's okay to be jealous, but don't be a hater. It's gonna be freaking awesome.
2. School (Money) I'm feeling, uh, nervous (?) about school. Maybe that's not the right word. But... I want to get going. I don't really like the knowledge that I will be in [a ton of] debt... but it hasn't happened. It's, like, the worst fortune cookie ever.
3. Work I'm still working. It's still fine. Nothing interesting to report. I'm gonna try and keep up a few hours when I go to school... just for a little spending money.
4. Writing Oh man! I'm writing again. Not a ton, but for the past week, there's been a little bit everyday. Good deal!
5. I bought Little Dorrit. I'm excited to watch it... yay for BBC!
6. Did I mention the cruise? |

| I smell a senior prank... |
[May. 9th, 2009|05:56 pm] |
The top five scholars from Greenhills got a little write up in the local paper. One of the kids blurbs said...
"Alex is a member of the Cum Laude Society as well as Student Leaders vs. Unjust Treatment and Teens Initiating a Trusting Society. He plays lacrosse and soccer and is a member of the American Nautical Athletics League."
Hmmm... I smell shenanigans! (S.L.U.T., T.I.T.S., and A.N.A.L.) (Oh, and none of those things exist) |

| Back in Ann Arbor |
[May. 8th, 2009|11:38 pm] |
The hum of crickets paired with the distant sound of the train clanking through town may very well be the perfect sounds to fall asleep to.
Reading a good book on the porch swing with the puppies while the sun considers setting on a spring evening is a pretty fabulous way to spend your time.
I mean... there's lots of things to get upset about in this world. But as long as there are crickets & trains, and puppies & porch swings, I'm gonna go ahead and say that things are pretty nice.
I know that I've said it before, but I'm going to say it again... I'm so happy to be back in Michigan. It doesn't feel like a regressed at all (like I feared), it feels like settling into a more complete version of life... one where I read, teach, learn, sing... I'm not just getting through the days and surprised when things turn out enjoyably, I'm savoring my time.
I suppose that I will write a more substantial update sometime soon... but I didn't want to leave my journal wallowing in depressed exhaustion. Better to let everyone know that life is beautiful. |

| Gross. |
[May. 6th, 2009|11:03 pm] |
It is positively dreadful to go to bed with the knowledge that no matter how much power-sleeping you do, you will most definitely be exhausted tomorrow.
Ugh. |

| Flint, Baby! |
[May. 1st, 2009|12:03 am] |
Hello Livejournal!
Tomorrow I'm heading out for my last Forensics event of the season... I'm judging the high school state finals. Thrills and Chills! This weekend will mark the end of the forensics season. Having just finished school (today), and the show (two weeks ago), I'm at a bit of a loss as to what I should do with myself.
Of course, work has decided to swoop in a take care of some of my time (which is fine with me), and the sibs who are currently in college will be coming home soon... but, it's just kind of nice to have not much going on.
Believe me, I realize that come mid-June, my life is turning into an all out work-all-the-time fest. It will be nice to rest up.
Anyway... no interweb for the next few days. Try to get along without me. |

| Grump McGee... that's me! |
[Apr. 27th, 2009|10:27 pm] |
Well... I feel pretty pathetic right now.
Part of me feels like maybe I'm going through post-show depression a few weeks late. Or almost-but-not-quite-post-school depression. Or post-forensics depression.
Or stupid depression.
Or not depression. Just shame and horror and disgust.
I hate to whine and run, but I don't even know if I can (or should) go into my secret turmoil on the good ol' eljay. (Let's be honest, I'll cave and type something up...) But for now... maybe it's best to curl up with the puppies and read a little.
Wow. I kind of hate myself for typing this entry. |

| Creepy... |
[Apr. 24th, 2009|01:11 pm] |
My computer keeps shutting itself down and resetting its clock to December 30th, 1969 @ 7:01PM.
It's happened about four times... I think it's trying to tell me something.
Maybe I'll figure out how to time travel! |
